Mirage advance to state semi-final

Mirage advance to state semi-final

It was another memorible game for the state ranked Mirage. While the fan bus from Proctor to the state quarterfinal game got canceled due to weather the Proctor-Hermantown team showed fire on the ice.

The fourth-seeded Mirage were well-prepared to play the game they did Wednesday. But so was No. 5 seeded Eagles, and in the end — in overtime — the Mirage made one more play than Lourdes did and pulled out a 3-2 victory in a Class A girls hockey game at the Xcel Energy Center.

Proctor/Hermantown (19-7-3) advances to Friday’s 1:30 p.m. state semifinal against No. 1 Warroad. Lourdes (15-10-1) will play at noon today in a consolation game against St. Paul United at Tria Rink in downtown St. Paul.  The semifinals and championship games will be streamed live on www.prep45.com at no charge.

The 1-hour 50-minute game came down to the final 138.9 seconds.

The Mirage were stunned late in regulation when, on a power play, Lourdes defenseman Maggie Hanzel took a feed from senior defenseman Ali Ratzloff and fired a wrist shot from the high slot past P/H goalie Ryan Gray.

That goal tied the score 2-2 with 42.9 seconds to play in the third period and forced overtime.

But just 1:36 into OT, Michaela Phinney found senior forward Kaitlyn Fawcett alone in the slot and fed her the puck. Fawcett got a clean shot off that hit the back of the net.

The Mirage controlled play for a majority of the first period and their offensive-zone pressure paid off at the 11:57 mark. Dehli Heikes won a faceoff and drew the puck back to Aurora Opsahl, who fired a shot from the left circle for a 1-0 lead.

The Mirage advantage could have been better, had it not been for the superb play of Lourdes junior goalie Corrin Hanson (30 saves).

Top 3 game Highlights

1. Kaitlyn Fawcett (P/H): The senior forward scored the game-winning goal in OT.

2. Corrin Hanson (Lourdes): The junior goalie was outstanding, stopping 30 shots to keep the Eagles in the game throughout.

3. Ryan Gray (P/H): The Mirage goalie was equally strong, making 24 saves to lead her team to the win.
