After a generation girls return to state

After nearly a generation the Proctor Girls basketball team advances to the Minnesota State AA Girl's Basketball Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Runners up last year the Rails beat Duluth Marshal 62-46 in the 2019 Section 7AA girls basketball championship Friday before an estimated 1,500 at Romano Gym.

Proctor (24-6) will play Caladonia (23-4) at Williams Arena on the U of M campus.

Proctor will be making its third state tournament appearance and first since 2001.

The Rails played outstanding at both ends of the court using a suffocating defense to shut down Duluth Marshall explosive offense. Marshall (22-8) was held to its second-lowest scoring output of the season with Proctor playing Proctor man-to-man defense.

The Rails held Gianna Kneepkens, who led all scorers, to 22 points and Grace Kirk added 18 only 6 of those points came in the scond half. Kneepkens averages of 34 points. The rest of the Hilltopoers scored a combined six points.

The Rails outscored the Hilltopers had 33 - 27 points in the first half and 29-19 in the second.

The Rails had three players in double digits: Sam Pogatchnik led the team with 21 points, Payton Rodberg 14 and Katelyn Marunich 10, Others scoring were; Liz Frase 4, Sam Parendo 5, Morgan Nylund 3, Josie Maahs 1, and Hailie Evans 4.

Marshall had 4 tournovers in the first half and 6 in the second while Proctor had 5 and 3.

Proctor was 4 of 7 for free throws in the first half and 7 of 16 in the second. Hilltopers were 4 of 5 ffrom the line in the first and 3 of 4 in the second.

Both teams only had one senior on the team.

Proctor came close to going to state last year. They lost to Mesabi East in the section title game.

The Rails join Mountain Iron-Buhl (Class A) and Hibbing (Class AAA) as the Northland's representative.
